How to choose the right granite for your kitchen
01
Colour families and where they work
Light granites like White Ice and Alaska White brighten smaller kitchens and pair well with dark cabinetry for contrast. Dark granites like Black Galaxy and Absolute Black anchor large islands and create a focal point in open-concept layouts. Warm tones like Santa Cecilia and Colonial Gold complement wood cabinetry and traditional interiors. Most Toronto kitchens we install fall into the light or dark category, with warm tones popular in suburban GTA homes.

02

Veining vs speckle
Granite patterns fall into two main types: veining and speckle. Veined granites like Bianco Antico have flowing lines similar to marble, creating movement across the surface. Speckled granites like Black Galaxy have an even distribution of mineral flecks for a more uniform look. Keep in mind that a small sample looks different from a full slab at scale. A subtle pattern in a sample can become busy across a 40 square foot kitchen, and a bold vein in a sample may be the only one on the entire slab.
03
THE CRAFT
Polished granite has a high-gloss reflective finish that brings out the full depth of colour and pattern. Honed granite has a matte finish that hides scratches and fingerprints better, popular in busy kitchens. For edge profiles, standard eased and pencil round edges are included in your quote. Premium options like bevelled, ogee, bullnose, and mitered waterfall are available at additional cost. We recommend choosing your edge during your consultation where we can show you the options on real stone.

Viewing slabs in person
Granite looks different on screen than it does in person. Colour temperature, veining scale, and surface depth all shift depending on lighting. Book a consultation at our Toronto office to discuss your project, review granite options with our team, and get guidance on selecting your slab. We work with trusted stone suppliers across the GTA and will direct you to the right yard to hand-pick your slab in person.
05
Pairing granite with cabinets and flooring
White cabinets pair well with almost any granite, but especially high-contrast options like Black Galaxy or Steel Grey. Dark cabinets work best with lighter granites like White Ice or Giallo Ornamental to prevent the kitchen from feeling heavy. Wood cabinets complement warm granites like Santa Cecilia and Colonial Gold. For flooring, lighter hardwood or LVP pairs with dark granite to create balance, while darker floors work well with light granite surfaces. If your backsplash is busy, choose a calmer granite. If the backsplash is simple, a dramatic veined slab can be the statement piece. Our team helps match all of these elements during your consultation.
