How to choose porcelain for your kitchen, bathroom, or outdoor space

01

Porcelain and sintered stone are the same material.

One material, two names

If you have been researching countertops, you have likely seen both terms and wondered which one to choose. The short answer: they refer to essentially the same material. Porcelain slabs are made by compressing natural minerals under extreme heat and pressure to create an ultra-compact, non-porous surface. Sintered stone is produced the same way. The countertop industry uses the terms interchangeably, and some brands label their product one way while a competitor labels an identical product the other. What matters is not the name but the finish, thickness, and quality of the slab. Every slab in our collection is both porcelain and sintered stone.

Finishes explained

Porcelain offers a wider range of surface finishes than any natural stone. Our collection includes six. Polished gives a high-gloss reflective surface that brings out depth in marble-look patterns. Matt is a flat, non-reflective finish that hides fingerprints and reads modern. Soft Matt sits between the two with a gentle sheen. Rough Matt and Brushed add texture you can feel, ideal for a tactile, natural look and better slip resistance on outdoor surfaces. Velvet is the softest touch finish, smooth but completely non-reflective. The finish changes how the same pattern looks and feels, so we recommend seeing samples in person before deciding.

03

ONLY MATERIAL RATED FOR BOTH

Indoor and outdoor use

Porcelain is the only countertop material fully rated for outdoor use. It is UV stable, so colours never fade in direct sunlight, and it is freeze-thaw resistant, which matters through a Toronto winter. The same slab that works as your kitchen countertop can wrap an outdoor BBQ island, clad a feature wall, or surface a bathroom vanity. Slabs marked Indoor-Outdoor in our collection carry this full rating. If you are planning a connected indoor-outdoor design, porcelain lets you carry one material and one look across both spaces, something no other countertop material can do.

Porcelain countertop edges comparing 12mm and 20mm slab thickness

Thickness: 12mm and 20mm

Porcelain comes in slimmer profiles than quartz or granite, which is part of its modern appeal. Our collection includes 12mm and 20mm slabs. The 12mm option creates a sleek, minimal edge that suits contemporary kitchens and is lighter for wall cladding or vertical applications. The 20mm option gives a more substantial edge closer to traditional stone thickness, with added strength for high-use kitchen surfaces and outdoor installations. Both can be mitered to create a thicker apparent edge or waterfall profile if you want the look of a chunkier slab. We help you choose the right thickness for your application during consultation.

05

Pattern styles and pairing

Porcelain patterns fall into a few main families. Marble-look slabs replicate Calacatta, Statuario, and other classic stones with dramatic veining, without the maintenance of real marble. Concrete and cement-look finishes suit industrial and minimalist kitchens. Solid and stone-look options provide a calmer, uniform surface. For pairing, high-gloss marble-look porcelain works beautifully with handleless modern cabinetry, while matt and textured finishes complement wood and warmer interiors. For outdoor kitchens, a textured Rough Matt or Brushed finish is both practical and visually grounded. Our team helps match the right slab to your cabinets, flooring, and overall design during your showroom visit.
